Kitchen Cabinet Installation for Home Improvement

When thinking about home improvements Chicago, most people start with the kitchen. There are a wide variety of pre-fabricated cabinets that can be used to increase the value of your home and better utilize the space available. Once you have decided on the type of cabinets that you are going to install, find the wall studs. If the cabinet is wide enough, it should be secured to a minimum of two wall studs. A level should be used to mark lines across the wall for the top and the bottom of the cabinets. Put a mark at the center of the studs and use a ruler to draw perpendicular lines for the cabinet sides. The next step is to nail a temporary ledge on the bottom line and prop the cabinet on it to see if the sides of the cabinet are going to fit flush against the wall. If there are gaps due to the cabinet having a recessed back, these can be corrected at this stage by trimming the sides. If you use a compass, (that anoying little tool you had to use in geometry class), you can set it at the largest gap and then trace the wall onto the side of the cabinet. If the cabinet back is set to be flush to the wall then gaps can be covered with a matching trim after the cabinets are hung. Use a pencil to mark the position of the center of the studs on the top and bottom of the cabinet and then take the cabinet down and connect the lines on the back. If you are using cabinets with a recessed back then you will need to sand the sides to match the curvature of the wall. Place tapered cedar shingles, layering them one on top of the next, along each stud line. Now you are ready to put the cabinet back into position and drill holes through the back of the cabinet and the shingles into the studs about 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the top and the bottom of the cabinet. The cabinets should be secured with screws that are long enough to extend at least 2 inches into the studs to make sure that the cabinet will be weight bearing. If the cabinet is narrow you can nail furring strips that are 1 x 4 across the studs and then nail the cabinet to them. If the back of the cabinet is recessed, notch the sides of the back around the furring strips. This same method can be used to mount cabinets side by side in a row. Dressing up the kitchen with new cabinets and fixtures is one of the best ways to improve your home.
